Zip Through the Air at the Central Florida Zoo

By Janice McSherry

Orlando has plenty of attractions for thrill seekers, ranging from towering roller coasters at the theme parks to fast slides at the water parks, but one new challenger to the title of the most thrilling of all is the ZOOm Air Adventure Park at the Central Florida Zoo. If you have ever wanted to travel through the air like Tarzan, then this is the place to do it.

The Adventure Park is locate at Orlando’s Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens and offers tree-top adventures using platforms, cables and wires on several courses ranging from kids courses to adult courses.

The park provides you with a harness system, trains you  how to use it, then sends you off into the trees to discover “your inner child,” while qualified park operators monitor your activities from below.

Each trail is tailored to the needs and capacity of the participants.  The trails for kids are closer to the ground, while the adult trails are at tree-top level.  If you want to go to the heights of the forest then you must participate in some safety orientation and some practice on the ground.

When the orientation is completed you are ready to test your skills in the various courses.

You can choose from four tree-top courses known as Upland 1, Upland 2 and Rainforest 1 and Rainforest 2. There are two course options for kids depending on their height and age.

If you want to try all the courses from the most basic to the most challenging then it will take you close to three hours. The courses will challenge you to develop skills like walking on swinging poles, crossing on single-strand cables, balance and coordination and sure-footedness. And while you are having fun you will also get a unique look at the flora and fauna on the tree-top level.

As might be expected, there are some strict safety guidelines that must be followed when you participate in the aerial activities. You must wear closed, secured, athletic footwear  and cannot come with  sandals, flip-flops, Crocs, slippers, Five-Finger shoes, etc.     Pregnant women are expressly prohibited from going on any ZOOm Air course. Children under 18 must have a parent/guardian sign a release register and children under the age of 12 need a parent or guardian to follow them (from the ground) throughout the course.   There are height requirements as well. Children must be between 36 and 60 inches tall and at least four years old. Participation in the Upland and Rainforest courses should be at least 54 inches tall.

ZOOm Air is open every day, except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, at 9:00 a.m.

The last admission for Upland or Upland & Rainforest is 4:30, every day and the last

admission for  the Kids’ Course and for upgrades (second round on Kids’, Big Zip upgrade, or add all of Rainforest to Upland) is 4:30 weekdays, 5:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

If you know someone who has tried everything, then take him or her to the Orlando Zoo and let them experience the fun and thrills of the ZOOm Air park.
